SkyCell has unveiled a new high-capacity air freight container designed to improve the transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals across global supply chains.

The 6500X unit offers up to 300 hours of independent runtime at 20°C, maintaining precise internal temperature ranges of either 2°C to 8°C or 15°C to 25°C, even in external conditions ranging from -40°C to +60°C.

Designed for reliability on complex routes

The company said the container’s extended autonomy reduces reliance on external infrastructure during transit, helping to minimise handling interventions such as repacking and limiting the number of handovers.

Pharmaceutical shipments often pass through multiple hubs and transport modes, increasing the risk of temperature excursions. SkyCell said the 6500X is designed to maintain stability across long and complex routes, improving reliability.

Multi-modal capability

The container can be used across air, land and sea transport without requiring changes in packaging or protection, allowing operators to adapt routes based on cost, urgency or disruption.

This flexibility is intended to support more resilient logistics strategies, particularly as supply chains face increasing volatility.

Focus on efficiency and ease of handling

Built for operational simplicity, the 6500X is compatible with standard forklift equipment, enabling handling across a wide range of logistics environments without the need for specialised tools.

With a tare weight of 877kg — described as the lowest in its class — and a payload capacity of 4,625kg, the container can carry up to five European pallets or four US pallets in a single unit.

This allows for greater consolidation of shipments, reducing fragmentation and improving efficiency at scale.

Industry collaboration behind development

According to Richard Ettl, the product was developed in response to changing industry conditions.

He said increasing product value, greater sensitivity of pharmaceutical goods and more extreme temperature conditions had all contributed to rising risks in global logistics.

“The 6500X was developed in close collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, airline partners and freight forwarders to address these challenges,” he said.

Supporting sustainability and cost efficiency

SkyCell said the 6500X is designed to work alongside its smaller 1500X container, allowing companies to better match capacity to shipment size.

This approach aims to improve load optimisation, reduce logistics costs and lower carbon emissions by making more efficient use of available space across the supply chain.
