Heathrow Airport’s cargo operations soared in 2024, with total volumes surpassing 1.5 million tonnes—a 10.4% increase compared to 2023.

December alone saw nearly 138,000 tonnes of goods transported, reflecting a 3.5% year-on-year rise as global traders and forwarders leveraged the airport’s extensive long-haul network to move high-value, time-critical goods.

Regional Performance Highlights

The robust growth in cargo volumes was driven by strong demand across multiple markets, particularly North America and Asia-Pacific:

  • North America: Cargo volumes climbed 14.7% to 624,756 tonnes for the year, with December seeing an 8.4% increase.
  • Asia-Pacific: The region experienced a 14.3% year-on-year growth, totaling 408,177 tonnes in 2024, supported by a 5% December rise.
  • Africa: This market showed the largest percentage growth, with a 22.4% increase for the year, reaching 96,253 tonnes. December volumes rose 11%.
  • Latin America: Cargo volumes increased by 9.6% year-on-year to 55,674 tonnes, with an 11.7% rise in December.

Declines in European Cargo

While global markets demonstrated strong performance, volumes within Europe faced declines. EU cargo volumes fell by 11% to 85,550 tonnes in 2024, while non-EU Europe recorded a smaller drop of 1.9%, totaling 40,212 tonnes.

Strategic Role of Long-Haul Connectivity

Heathrow’s growing long-haul network was instrumental in driving the airport’s cargo growth. The airport remains a vital hub for high-value goods, particularly during the holiday season.

Heathrow Cargo, commented: “2024 was a record-breaking year for our cargo operations. The strong performance, particularly in North America and Asia-Pacific, highlights the importance of our global connectivity for traders and forwarders.

“As we move into 2025, our focus remains on optimizing capacity and delivering seamless logistics solutions for our customers.”

December Cargo Performance

Cargo volumes during the season of gift-giving reached 137,979 tonnes, marking the highest December in recent years. This growth reflects Heathrow’s resilience as a global logistics hub amid evolving market demands.

With continued investments in infrastructure and connectivity, Heathrow is poised to further strengthen its position as a leader in global air cargo operations in 2025.
