Pharmaceutical unit load device (ULD) specialist Envirotainer has taken an equity stake in Swiss Airtainer, a developer of sustainable, temperature-controlled air cargo containers, as part of a push to advance cold chain technology and services.
The deal gives Envirotainer exclusive global rights to offer the Swiss Airtainer container within its product portfolio.
While the size of the investment has not been disclosed, Swiss Airtainer said the funds will be used to scale production and accelerate research and development.
Swiss Airtainer’s IoT-enabled, lightweight containers are designed for the secure transport of temperature-sensitive goods such as vaccines, pharmaceuticals and other high-value perishables.
The flagship RKN container is equipped with solar panels for self-sustaining energy and real-time communication tools to optimise logistics and reduce emissions.
The technology complements Envirotainer’s sustainability-driven range, which includes its recently launched Releye family of containers.
The company has also submitted targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) aimed at cutting supply chain emissions.
Niklas Adamsson, Envirotainer interim chief executive said: “Swiss Airtainer’s technology enables significant CO₂ reductions and strengthens our commitment to sustainable innovation.
“Our mission has always been to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of critical medicines while minimising environmental impact.”
The investment comes as the pharmaceutical industry faces mounting pressure to cut its environmental footprint while maintaining the reliability of global cold chain logistics.
