US low-cost carrier and cargo operator Sun Country Airlines has been acquired by Las Vegas-based travel company Allegiant, the owner of Allegiant Air, in a deal that keeps Sun Country’s Amazon freighter operations in place.

Allegiant said the two airlines will continue to operate separately until a single operating certificate is approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The company confirmed that Sun Country’s long-term contract with Amazon will continue unchanged.

Under the agreement, Sun Country operates a fleet of 20 Boeing 737-800 freighter aircraft for Amazon Prime Air.

“Sun Country remains a major narrow-body freighter operator in the United States,” Allegiant said, adding that the multi-year Amazon contract remains a core part of the airline’s business.

Based at Minneapolis–St Paul International Airport, Sun Country plays a key role in Amazon’s domestic logistics network, flying cargo routes across the US.

Alongside its cargo operations, the airline also operates scheduled passenger services across North America.

Sun Country began flying for Amazon in May 2020, initially under a 10-aircraft sublease agreement that was later expanded.

In November 2025, the airline said it had fully deployed all 20 freighters and reported a 50% year-on-year increase in cargo revenue.
